Georgia's coastal barrier islands represent both public and private lands managed by various governmental agencies, private organizations and private landowners. These islands are extraordinary features of our coastal ecosystem and provide visitors with a broad range of opportunities for education, recreation and research. These links provide information about the natural and cultural resources, types of access, management structure, visitor opportunities and other important characteristics of Georgia's coastal islands.

Tybee Island is the northernmost of Georgia's barrier islands. Located near Savannah and easily accessible by car, the island is a popular tourist destination. The island is an incorporated municipality and is managed by the City of Tybee Island.

Wassaw Island is a National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The island is located near Savannah and just to the east of Skidaway Island.

Ossabaw Island is a Heritage Preserve managed for the citizens of Georgia by the state's Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division.

Blackbeard Island is a National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The island is located just to the north of Sapelo.

Sapelo Island is located near Darien Georgia and is accessible by ferry. The island houses the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve; state Wildlife Management Area, and the University of Georgia Marine Institute. The Reserve and the Wildlife Management Area are managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division.

Wolf Island is a National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Refuge includes Egg Island and Little Egg Island. These islands are located just to the south of Sapelo.

St. Simons Island is located near Brunswick, Georgia. Connected to the mainland by a causeway road, the island is a popular tourist destination. Information for the island can be found on the Brunswick-Golden Isles Visitors Bureau website.

Jekyll Island  is state-owned and is managed by the Jekyll Island Authority. A popular tourist destination and residential community, it is easily accessed via a causeway.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the southernmost island near St. Marys, Georgia and is managed by the National Park Service. Cumberland is accessible by boat only.
